News Unplugged

Let me start off by saying, contrary to what some people think, we don’t get a thrill out of severe weather, in the news or weather department. We’re just as tired of tornadoes, hail storms, flooding and storm damage as you are.  And last night’s latest round that swept through the Tulsa metro didn’t help. Two personal thoughts from last night. I knew thousands of Paul McCartney fans were piling into the… Read More

It’s a beautiful Friday, and the beginning of another month. But can you remember (if you lived in Oklahoma) what happened two years ago today? The above picture is a pretty good clue. Yeah, we were buried in a record-setting blizzard. More than 14 inches of snow dumped on Tulsa on February 1, 2011, and even more in outlying areas. To make it even tougher to swallow, the temperatures leading up to… Read More

We are smack dab into the “dog days of summer”. How do I know? Just ask my two labs. They’re hot, tired and begging to come in the house.   For the third straight day Tulsa hit 112 degrees, another record high for the date, and once again the hottest in the country. The heat wave is just about all people want to talk about (even over the Olympics), and everyone’s asking… Read More

It’s so hot, even my shadow can’t find any shade! We’re on the heat watch again in Tulsa today (Wednesday). Everyone I talk to, from the grocery store to the hairdresser, is asking me to please turn off the broiler outside (I’m paraphrasing a bit). I would if I could. It’s so hot in Tulsa, that we set records for highest high and highest low … in the same day. Tuesday’s high… Read More

Take a look at those temps on the left. Day after day after day of blistering heat. Last summer Tulsa had 44 days over 100 degrees, hitting 113 on at least one afternoon. July 2011 in Oklahoma was the hottest month in the U.S…. ever. Oh my! The summer of 2012 is nearly on par with last year. So far Tulsa has 23 days surpassing the century mark, and our weather guru,… Read More

It’s SO hot, even my shadow is sweating. We hit at least 100 degrees for the fourth day in a row today. And there’s no relief in sight. It’s still June. Traditionally the hottest days are ahead of us. Remember last summer? Tulsa had 44 days over 100, and July in Oklahoma was the hottest month ever in the U.S.! SO hot, even my shadow can’t find any shade. Thank you. I’ll… Read More

The weather kept me up much of the night. I couldn’t believe how hard the wind was blowing. I don’t have a wind gauge, but I would guess it had to be up there close to 70 mph. I thought all the trees were coming down. Woke up this morning and saw that quite a few trees and large branches did fall in my neighborhood. My neighbor’s trampoline went flying… … and… Read More

We were on severe weather watch throughout the afternoon and evening Friday, and when I left after the late news, chief meteorologist Frank Mitchell stayed behind to watch for any tornadoes heading into northeastern Oklahoma. I don’t know how long he was there, but he was planning for at least 4 am. Meteorologists spend countless hours at the station during severe weather season. And it’s not just on camera during the height… Read More

We hit 71 today in Tulsa. 71! It’s been an unseasonably warm winter in Oklahoma. So far. I know winter isn’t over yet, but we made it through December AND January without a major snow or ice storm. And much of the rest of the country has too. So it’s hard to believe what we were facing this time last year. It’s been a year since our record-setting blizzard brought much of… Read More

As Hurricane Irene takes aim at the right coast, millions of people are warned to expect the worst and hope for the best. Where will it hit? How hard will it hit? Will it end up being a dud? Should I take it seriously? These are questions being asked tonight. The same questions I remember asking years ago. “The end is near” We moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1993, just before another… Read More

It’s been a hot summer. Just how hot? Take a look at those church signs. Satan and hell are getting some extra publicity. July in Oklahoma was the hottest month ever… for any state. That’s how hot it’s been. Tulsa has had 36 days over 100 degrees this summer, including a handful over 110! Climatologists say the average temperature in Oklahoma during July was slightly warmer than 89 degrees. That’s putting the highs… Read More

I was supposed to throw out the first pitch at Saturday night’s Drillers game. That was the plan, but the weather didn’t cooperate. See what happened: Never got to throw the pitch. It would have been my 15th first pitch over the past 30 plus years. We’ll try again next year…. weather permitting.
