I spent the last week in California visiting our West coast family and friends (some came down from Oregon as well). As usual the jokes and remarks about Oklahoma started almost as soon as our covered wagon plane landed.  Here are a couple of  examples: “You have paved roads back there?” “How many outhouses does your double-wide have?” Real funny huh?   I don’t get angry because I know they’re just joking. I think…. Read More

It’s so hot, even my shadow can’t find any shade! We’re on the heat watch again in Tulsa today (Wednesday). Everyone I talk to, from the grocery store to the hairdresser, is asking me to please turn off the broiler outside (I’m paraphrasing a bit). I would if I could. It’s so hot in Tulsa, that we set records for highest high and highest low … in the same day. Tuesday’s high… Read More

Take a look at those temps on the left. Day after day after day of blistering heat. Last summer Tulsa had 44 days over 100 degrees, hitting 113 on at least one afternoon. July 2011 in Oklahoma was the hottest month in the U.S…. ever. Oh my! The summer of 2012 is nearly on par with last year. So far Tulsa has 23 days surpassing the century mark, and our weather guru,… Read More

We were on severe weather watch throughout the afternoon and evening Friday, and when I left after the late news, chief meteorologist Frank Mitchell stayed behind to watch for any tornadoes heading into northeastern Oklahoma. I don’t know how long he was there, but he was planning for at least 4 am. Meteorologists spend countless hours at the station during severe weather season. And it’s not just on camera during the height… Read More

The Super Bowl is tomorrow, and we’ll find out who the best NFL team is. But we found out which high school football team is the best in Oklahoma more than two months ago. Again. Thanks to Vype Magazine for putting the Union Redskins on the front cover of their January issue. The Redskins beat Jenks in the semis and Broken Arrow in the final to pick up their fourth state championship… Read More

A couple of months ago I asked my youngest son, Tommy: “Would you want the Oklahoma Sooners win the national championship or the Union Redskins (his high school) win a fourth straight state championship?” That was back when both teams were in the thick of the championship hunt. Tough choice, I thought, because he’ll be our third at OU in a few years. But his answer was instant: “Union, dad.” The Redskins… Read More

Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys and Sooners. Bedlam. While it’s not for a shot at the national championship like both teams and their fans hoped for, this Saturday’s game is still huge. Winner goes to the Fiesta Bowl. Tulsa’s Channel 8 will have the game starting at 7 pm. Right before that, look for us with our Road to Bedlam special at 6:30 live from Stillwater. There’s a lot at stake, even… Read More

What in the name of Armageddon is going on? Since the weekend, Oklahoma has had quite a few earthquakes and aftershocks (as I’m writing this we’re feeling ANOTHER strong aftershock). And today, nearly a dozen tornadoes touched down here. That’s not unusual during the spring, but November? And after a weekend of bouncing up and down? Here’s a video of one of the bigger twisters today. It was spotted by one of Tulsa Channel… Read More

It’s been a hot summer. Just how hot? Take a look at those church signs. Satan and hell are getting some extra publicity. July in Oklahoma was the hottest month ever… for any state. That’s how hot it’s been. Tulsa has had 36 days over 100 degrees this summer, including a handful over 110! Climatologists say the average temperature in Oklahoma during July was slightly warmer than 89 degrees. That’s putting the highs… Read More

I think I’m changing my mind about the weather. We’ve been over 100 degrees all except a few days since June. July was the hottest month ever in Oklahoma! Today Tulsa hit 112. Tomorrow it could be 115! By the way, that’s the highest temp EVER in Tulsa. Day after day after day of this has me longing for February. I never thought I’d say that. And February was cruel in another… Read More

Oklahoma and much of the nation is baking again today. I’m looking at the thermometer as I write this at around 3:30 pm, and the temp reads 106. So it’s safe to say the high will be around 107 or 108 today. That makes 24 days over 100 in Tulsa so far this year. I’ve taken a sneak peek at the 8 day planner and just about every day is forecasted over… Read More
