Occasionally after reading one of the stories in our newscasts I’ll come home and check if it applies to me. Tonight was one of those times. There was a story that worried me. And if you’re a pet owner, it should worry you too. There’s a warning about a popular treat many people give their pets. The FDA is investigating “jerky treat” products. And for good reason. Since 2007 they’ve been tied… Read More

One of the perks for working at a television station is having the inside track in getting your pet’s picture on the air. That’s Jeter, one of my labs, in the above picture. Whenever we have a snow event, we encourage our viewers to send in their photos. Pets, children, trees, themselves. We love to share them with the rest of our viewers. I got to share this moment I had with… Read More

A new study found that families with pets in the house could end up with healthier kids. The Finnish study followed nearly 400 newborns during their first year and found that babies who grew up with dogs or cats had fewer ear infections and respiratory problems. Researchers say animal interaction helps a baby’s immune system to mature more quickly. They also found that kids with pets needed less medication, even when they… Read More

There’s a new list out showing the top 10 cities to live if you’re a pet.  Where are pets pampered and spoiled the most?  According to a report in US News, Arizona cities are very pet friendly. Spending analysis from Bundle suggests Scottsdale spends the most on their pets… about 48 dollars a month. After all our family does to keep our three dogs, two cats and fish happy, I thought for… Read More

People aren’t the only ones who pack on a few extra pounds during the cold, winter months. So do our dogs and cats. One of my Labs, Jeter, LOVES to camp out in the kitchen. No problem when the weather is nice and he’s outside burning off some calories by swimming, walking, running and riding his bike. (Okay, maybe not that last one.) But when the pool’s closed, the temps are below… Read More

Here’s one of those studies that caught our attention in the newsroom. Are dogs as smart as kids? (Insert joke here.) I have three of each, so I’m interested in how this one turns out. A new study finds that dogs have the developmental abilities of a two-year-old. So I guess that means my three boys (ages 16, 18 and 21) shouldn’t feel threatened in an IQ test with our two Labs… Read More

From costly medications to high-priced parties, Americans continue to pamper their pets. Last year, $48 billion was spent on our pets. When it comes to Fido and Fluffy (or in my case, Jeter, Major, Tipsy, Butters and Billie), Americans are spending more than ever, even during lean economic times. I went to Partnering for Pets, an organization in Owasso dedicated to saving the lives of homeless animals, for help on cutting our pet… Read More

Want to take your best friend to the Drillers game Saturday night? Your real best friend? (As you can see, one of my dogs, Jeter, is a HUGE Yankees fan.) It’s time for the annual Bark in the Park, when dogs can also enjoy a game at ONEOK Field. It’s another one of KTUL’s Grand Slam Saturdays at the ballpark. The following is a portion of an interview Friday with Drillers’ Marketing… Read More

It was a relaxing early Sunday morning until one of our dogs (Tipsy) and one of our cats (Butters) decided to practice their upcoming MMA fight on our bed. The psycho kitty usually wins. Check out to see today’s winner.

We have five animals… 3 dogs and 2 cats… and there’s a story behind how each one became a member of our family.  As I write this, Jeter, one of our labs, is staring at me, with his face pushed up against the glass door. “Can you see me?  Hey, can you see me?” He’s outside, looking in.  He loves to be in when it’s cold out.  No, he loves to be… Read More

Next time you hear a car honk, look closely.  It may be a dog trapped in a hot car pleading for help.  Sounds bizarre, but it happened over the weekend in Pennsylvannia.  A lab named Max took matters into his own paws to escape a scorching situation.  Here’s the story from WFMZ in Allentown. Unfortunately, many people leave their pets in hot cars and very few animals can honk the horn for… Read More
