Sophia and Jacob Most Popular Baby Names of 2011
A word of caution for parents wanting the hippest names for their babies: chances are what’s popular at the time, won’t be decades later. And vice versa. More on that later.
The Social Security Administration is out with the most popular baby names 0f 2011. Sophia takes the top spot for the first time ever for the girls. Jacob (my middle son’s name) is the most popular boys name for the 13th straight year!
Here’s the top ten list:
- Sophia Jacob
- Isabella Mason
- Emma William
- Olivia Jayden
- Ava Noah
- Emily Michael
- Abigail Ethan
- Madison Alexander
- Mia Aiden
- Chloe Daniel
The SSA provides lists of baby names dating back to 1880 on its website. The top two names that year were John and Mary. John is now #27 and Mary has fallen to #112… the lowest for both names.
My name the year I was born was the 8th most popular baby name. By 2011, it had plunged to #159. My wife’s name, Michelle, was third on the list her birth year (thanks to the Beatles). Now, it’s only 144th.
Over the past 100 years, Michael has held the top spot most often (44 times), with James the overall winner for boys. Mary, despite falling in recent years, has been the most popular girl’s name in the last century. The list also includes top baby names by state and by decade.
By the way, Barack and Mitt have never made the list.
