Don’t Pay These Fees

Here’s a four letter word that costs you money…. fees. A couple of bucks in fees here and there can really add up. Kiplinger.com has ten fees on its do-not-pay list. They include:

  • Credit card late fees. To avoid them, sign up for payment alerts… Via text message or email… from your credit card company.
  • Directory assistance fees. Dialing 411 can cost more than a buck, but Kiplinger says you can get free directory assistance by calling 1-800-BING-411.
  • Baggage fees. All the airlines have them, except Southwest and JetBlue. To get around them, pack carry-ons, or send your luggage to your destination by FedEx, UPS or Postal Service ground shipping.
  • And don’t get caught paying cell phone roaming fees. Make sure you understand how your cell phone roaming and international charges work before your trip.
