Happy Anniversary to Mom and Dad!
This is a special day for my parents. They’ve been married 66 years. That’s a long time. Recently I asked them their secret to a long marriage. Commitment, love and faithfulness are three words I heard a lot. It certainly worked for them. And for the three dozen couples I met a couple of weeks ago who are members of the exclusive 50+ club.
Unfortunately, commitment, love and faithfulness is something fewer couples are practicing today. Married couples are now, for the first time, in the minority. From the New York Times:
Married couples represented just 48 percent of American households in 2010… This was slightly less than in 2000, but far below the 78 percent of households occupied by married couples in 1950.
And I’m sure in 1945, when my parents married, it was even higher than 78 percent. We can learn a lot from my parents’ generation. They’ve set the bar high for the rest of us.
Thanks. And Happy Anniversary!!
