Happy Anniversary to Mom and Dad!

My mom and dad sometime after getting married

This is a special day for my parents. They’ve been married 66 years. That’s a long time. Recently I asked them their secret to a long marriage. Commitment, love and faithfulness are three words I heard a lot. It certainly worked for them. And for the three dozen couples I met a couple of weeks ago who are members of the exclusive 50+ club.

Unfortunately, commitment, love and faithfulness is something fewer couples are practicing today. Married couples are now, for the first time, in the minority. From the New York Times:

Married couples represented just 48 percent of American households in 2010… This was slightly less than in 2000, but far below the 78 percent of households occupied by married couples in 1950.

And I’m sure in 1945, when my parents married, it was even higher than 78 percent. We can learn a lot from my parents’ generation. They’ve set the bar high for the rest of us.

Thanks. And Happy Anniversary!!

Eating breakfast in our backyard. My parents love oatmeal!

In my son’s college dorm room. Thank goodness they didn’t notice the poster on the wall behind them.

I said to my dad, “Here take this.” Then I snapped the picture of him holding the Obama bobblehead. Sorry.

Doug & Sue Bradshaw (66 years)

Picture was taken in Norman. They live in Oregon, so they’re Duck fans. And now they’re Sooner fans.

  1. Love it!!! That is fantastic…66 years…they look so happy too 🙂 I love that you’ve converted them to Sooner fans…and when I say converted…I may mean forced them 😉 LOL The more the merrier!

  2. Love it!! Your Mom & Dad are a wonderful example to us all. I’m so blessed to have known the Bradshaw family these many, many years!
