Woman Who Falls Into Mall Fountain While Texting Has More Problems
Cathy Cruz Marrero says she’s the one who became a YouTube sensation when surveillance video showed her falling into a fountain at a Pennsylvania mall while texting. She made the rounds of the morning TV shows today telling everyone how embarrassed she was. If she was so embarrassed, why spill the beans it was her?
Could it be she wants to make a little money from her misfortune? She’s upset that mall security didn’t come to her aid. Marrero and her attorney were on GMA this morning. They said a lawsuit could be in the works. Surprise, huh?
Falling into a mall fountain and being laughed at could be the least of Marrero’s problems. ABC News says she was in court today “for a status hearing on charges of five felony counts, including theft by deception and receiving stolen property.” Also from ABC News:
Marrero, 49, was charged in October 2009 for allegedly using a coworker’s credit cards to make more than $5,000 in purchases at a Target and a Zales jewelry store — $1,055 of those purchases were dismissed from the case in previous hearings.
She is expected to face sentencing at her next court date, on April 21, according to the Reading Eagle. Marrero is likely facing about six months of house arrest and electronic monitoring.
Now the whole world knows her problems. Maybe she should have kept quiet.
Still, Marrero told ABC she’s learned a lesson from her fall in the mall, and gave this advice on GMA: “Do not text and walk …,” she said. “The fountain could have been empty. … I could have walked into a bus, you know. …I could have got hit by a car. It can happen anywhere … anywhere.”
