America’s Most Stolen Vehicles

For auto thieves, bigger is better.  There’s a new list out of which vehicles are more likely to be stolen, and SUVs and pickup trucks top the list.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety analyzed insurance claims for theft involving newer vehicles. #1? The Cadillac Escalade. It’s alluring not just for what thieves can drive away with, but what they might walk away with.   IIHS’s Kim Hazelbaker says, “The wheels are gone, the interior — the very expensive interior– perhaps with the video players, the head restraints and all of that — that’s been taken out, and all that’s left is pretty much the shell of the vehicle.”

Also on the list? Big pickups like the Ford F-250 and the Chevy Silverado.  They may not seem like flashy targets, but sometimes, it’s what’s inside that counts.  “Some of those thefts are doubtless equipment or very expensive tool sets out of the back,” says Hazelbaker.

Cpl. James Stump, who heads up the Tulsa Police Auto Theft unit, told me stolen vehicles are huge right now in Tulsa.  He says they get around 40 cases a week, and 48 just last weekend alone.   And victims are partly to blame for the problem.  “People are leaving their vehicles running with the A/C on in this heat, as they run into the store,” Cpl. Stump says.  “Many times their vehicle is gone when they come back out.” He also wants people to be on the alert for tow trucks in their neighborhood.  Thieves are stealing cars right in front of homes, and towing them away.  Cpl. Stump says the price or steel is up, and many of the stolen vehicles end up as scrap.

Here’s a list of the top 10 stolen vehicles in Tulsa (from TPD):
